“The” Kay Ballard

“Are you ‘The’ Kay Ballard?”

“Of course!” I answer.

How else can I answer that question?  It is the truth, after all.  Kay Ballard is really my name and I am just as real as I can get.

However, when I am asked, eventually, regrettably, I must acknowledge the true intended question which is, after all, whether or not I am, in fact, the actress-comedienne-former big band chanteuse, Kaye Ballard.

The answer to the intended question is that I most assuredly and intentionally am not.

Notwithstanding my apparent lack of senior standing among those of us known as Kay Ballard, I arrogantly and mistakenly consider myself in possession of talents in the lively arts of sufficient quality and of adequate variety to live up to The name.

Certainly, I can be dramatic—some would say melodramatic. Also, people sometimes act as if they find me somewhat amusing.  And on the rare occasions I have been caught singing in public, kindly, no one has ever admitted to suffering from the noise.

So, I will continue to claim it.

“Yes, it is me.  Yes, I am she.  Yes, I am The Kay Ballard.”

As a special surprise treat, here’s a little tune, sung not by me, but by the actress and comedian Kaye Ballard. The aforementioned Kay Ballad with senior standing.

I, myself, learned to sing this song when I was a very young child. One day, when my family was out on one of our frequent and “fun” Sunday drives, (undertaken to permit my parents to scout for possible real estate investments) I performed this very song from the back seat of our car. My father listened to the words and was horrified! He thought it was pornographic!
